1996 - 1999 Richard joined InteliHealth to lead the technology department. Since
the the later stages of the Reality were mostly
theoretical work, Richard was looking for something that was hands on. Well he
certainly found that at InteliHealth. Projects and/or
responsibilities included:
InteliHealth's mission is to be the #1 trusted source for health information. In achieving that goal, their infrastructure had to be build with the utmost flexibility. This requirement was only that, a requirement -- there wasn't very much specificity beyond the requirement! Therefore, the technology team had to build a highly flexible system and guess about the attributes that would be required later on. This was no easy task in early 1996. What the team decided to do was to start with a database which would house all of the content required for the company. From there, we would build a flexible rendering system that allowed us to publish the content into a variety of forms including web pages. All of this had to be done by hand because there were no products that performed those functions at the time. The system built in 1996 is essentially the same system in use today. It's also the same system that won the 1999 Webby award in health. In mid 1999, the person in charge of distribution left and Richard was promoted to lead that group along with his duties as CTO. The distribution department's mission is to increase InteliHealth's page view supply by creating relationships with outside organizations. These relationships can take many forms including:
In stark contrast to his role as CTO, distribution was about business development. Here Richard learned -- and continues to learn -- skills such as business analysis, sales, product development, pricing, etc. It was a very exciting time for Richard! To learn more about InteliHealth click here.
