General

Richard has been involved in business leadership and technology since 1986 with roles ranging from software engineer to executive vice president and CTO. He has performed functions in software development, product & project management, online services, business development, financial services, monitizing web-content, electronic commerce and various broadband applications. A skilled leader, public speaker and technologist, Richard has been fortunate to be an early team member in four entrepreneurial ventures. Today, Richard runs a successful consulting practice leveraging skills learned from his many years as an entrepreneur.

The Network Connection (NASDAQ: TNCX) designs, installs and maintains interactive entertainment systems for hotels, cruise ships, passenger trains and corporate training / education.  Our innovative product offering is unique in the marketplace due to its scope and the ability to expand over time.  The TNCi product-line addresses such things as: 

Interactive video-on-demand
Electronic commerce
Laptop connectivity
Effective new revenue streams for our customers

Richard joined the company as part of a new 3-person management team to "re-launch" the company from its pre-existing hardware focus to provide a turn-key to the aforementioned vertical markets. Responsibilities while at TNCi include:

Chief Technology Officer

InteliHealth – a joint venture between Johns Hopkins University and Health System and Aetna US Healthcare – provides consumer health information, health-related products and diverse services delivered using a variety of media including the World Wide Web. Richard joined the company 2 weeks after it was incorporated February 1996. During his 3.5 year tenure, he was responsible for everything technical. This included:

Staffing
Corporate infrastructure
Production systems
Software development

Beyond his technology focus, Richard’s leadership was expanded with a promotion to head InteliHealth’s distribution area. The distribution department is responsible for finding and cultivating partnerships for distribution of InteliHealth’s diverse content product line. Responsibilities there include:

Business development
Prospecting and sales
Contract negotiation

Chief Technology Officer

Reality Online pioneered the concept of financial services geared exclusively to the individual investor. During Richard’s 7 year tenure, he worked his way from an entry-level technical lead to chief technology officer. Along the way, he worked on projects in conjunction with large and small corporations, was involved in the earliest stages of commercial online services, managed multiple technical projects, ran an engineering department of 40+ engineers, lead a team of product managers and ran the QA department for a short while. Skills cultivated here include:

Executive engineering management
Corporate management including executive committee, board meetings, budgets, contract negotiations

Technical Team Lead

Cricket Software was a ground-breaking software development company that was among the first to develop computer graphics applications for both the Macintosh and Windows computer platforms. These included Cricket Graph, Cricket Draw and Cricket Presents. Each of those application were brought to the early versions of Microsoft Windows 1.xx & 2.xx operating systems. Richard was involved in many facets of technology including Macintosh development, Windows development, software design, engineering management and eventually product management. Skills cultivated here include:

1983 – 1986 Silver Spring, MD

Electrical Engineer

Naval Surface Weapons Center is a Defense Department laboratory located in suburban Washington D.C. specializing in naval ordinance. Richard worked as a co-op for three years while studying electrical engineering at University of Maryland and continued working there six months after graduation. During his tenure at NSWC, Richard won numerous awards and was instrumental in developing new fusing technologies that combined audio frequency signal processing and microprocessors. Skills cultivated here include:

Digital signal processing using Motorola 80C51 microprocessor
Miniature circuit board design and development
Computer controlled testing
Wind tunnel instrumentation

B.S. Electrical Engineering

University of Maryland was chosen because of its highly acclaimed electrical engineering program. While at Maryland, Richard was involved in their co-operative education program in conjunction with his studies in electrical engineering.

Temple University
The Fox School  At the Fox School of Business, Richard conceived of and has successfully taught a new course on innovation. His is currently active in teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses.
Richard was inducted on 10 January 2001 as a fellow in eBusiness Institute within the Fox School of Business at Temple University

Personal

Richard has been a community volunteer for 12 years, the last seven years of which have been spent teaching decision making skills to prison inmates for a program called Thresholds of Delaware County
Married with 2 children ages 6 and 3
Enjoys participation in sporting activities such as mountain biking, basketball, racquetball and tennis
